Compared with applications in communication, military, consumer and other fields, car connectors have their own characteristics. The original design requirements are very high, especially the safety and reliability requirements, which are different from other applications and pose significant challenges for manufacturers.
(1) Traditional automotive connectors face challenges of "miniaturization, safety, and reliability"
The person in charge of sales and marketing at TE Connectivity's China Automotive Department stated that based on technical characteristics, automotive connectors are application-oriented connectors that can be customized according to specific needs. Connector manufacturers have high design requirements. At the same time, the production scale of automotive connectors is relatively large, and the quality requirements are also very high. Rapid market response, efficient design, large-scale and high-quality production are the core competitiveness of automotive connector suppliers. For the design challenges of automotive connectors, Molex China Sales Director Clark Zhou summarized three aspects:
1、 Small scale design, installing a large number of small cars in electronic products, requires meeting the key requirements of miniaturization.
Secondly, the multifunctionality of functions has posed challenges to the signal and power integrity of the interaction between various functions and the two end connectors. Moreover, the functionality not only enables a wide range of applications, but also achieves flexibility.
The third is sufficient reliability. Carefully driving and repairing a good car can cover a distance of 120000 miles. For automotive electronic devices, this typically means that they will continue to withstand vibrations, extreme temperatures, and irritating chemicals within 120000 miles.
Among the three major challenges, miniaturization is an important feature. In order to meet the needs of automobile manufacturers, 'small connectors can match more electronic components in the same space', MolexMini50 ® Sealed and unsealed wire to board sockets allow device manufacturers to utilize smaller pins, terminal blocks, and wire packages to encapsulate the circuit in a tighter space, saving 50% of space compared to traditional USCAR 0.64mm connectors. Sealed or unsealed Mini50 single and double row sockets also reduce costs.
In addition, Molex has developed Stac64 ® The system, a modular 0.64, 1.50, and 2.80mm terminal system, allows OEMs and equipment manufacturers to be more flexible in design. The Stac64 system is now compatible with stAK50h ® The signal entertainment connector system is compatible, and signal and Ethernet connections can be achieved through only one stAK50h connector interface, without the need for two separate connection systems.
Similarly, TE connectivity solutions continue to innovate on the basis of increasing functionality, such as supporting high-speed connectivity for autonomous driving and automotive infotainment systems, and TE has developed more compact coaxial connectivity solutions. MATE -AX。 Although smaller in size, it has increased frequency and functionality, with a higher frequency range and digital transmission capacity than FAKRA, reaching up to 20GHz and 9GHz bandwidth. A typical application scenario is that the current camera signal transmission requires the use of coaxial cables. Generally, car drivers use 4-6 cameras, and Tesla even uses eight cameras, which has a strong demand for miniaturization.
